JAP FAQFrequently asked questions regarding the internet connection or local network
Internet connection and local networkWhich internet service providers can I use?
You can use JAP with any ISP. Windows users should be aware of the exception with AOL and T-Online. If your provider requires a certain proxy, please read the instructions for required proxies. A low-cost dialer automatically chooses which internet provider is used based on the lowest price offered at that time of day. If you use Internet Explorer as your browser, it takes on the proxy settings required for connecting to this provider. If there are none, which is usually the case when a low-cost dialer is used, the proxy settings in Internet Explorer remain empty. Therefore, JAP will not work. One solution is to use a browser other than Internet Explorer. Yes! But please note that surfing with JAP will result in a slower connection speed than you would otherwise achieve with DSL. (Why?) Modem or ISDN users shouldn't have any noticeable speed disadvantage. If you use Internet Explorer as your web browser with DSL, you'll need to configure the proxy settings under "LAN Settings". (Instructions) Yes, as long as access to JAP isn't blocked at your workplace. If your workplace requires a certain proxy, be sure to see the tips for proxies. How do additional devices/hardware influence the installation and use of JAP?
JAP works with a personal firewall. We also recommend the use of one, since JAP only helps you surf anonymously and cannot protect your computer from external attacks. (Why?) When a new program is started for the first time, most firewalls ask whether the program should receive the privileges it asks for. You should simply answer this question with yes and also say that this setting should be saved for all future cases for this program (if possible). Otherwise you'll be asked again with each start of JAP. Please note that your firewall will not necessarily directly say that JAP wants internet access. Instead it may say that one of the following programs is being asked for: java, javaw, jview, wjview, jre or jrew. These are the names of the Java interpreter, depending on version and distributer. JAP requires the following rights, which you need to configure by hand if the firewall doesn't ask for them or if despite the firewall asking for them, it doesn't work: Some internet service providers set a specific proxy in the web browser, but this is often not necessary. First you should test to see if you can access the internet without this proxy. Carry out the following steps only if you're sure that you have to use a specific proxy. This is usually the case if you access the internet over a local network (for example at work). If you are able to activate and use the JAP service but after a certain amount of time are unable to continue surfing, that means the forced proxy automatically closes connections that are unused for a period of time. In this case (and please, only then), go to "Config/Miscellaneous" and activate the checkbox "Send dummy packet every x seconds". JAP will then send data in regular intervals so that the proxy doesn't close the connection. As opposed to modem or ISDN users, you need to configure the proxy settings in Internet Explorer under "LAN Settings" if you use a router. (Instructions) By using a KEN! DSL proxy, all of your internet page requests are sent through this proxy. Thus KEN! DSL works as a local forced proxy and you'll need to follow our forced proxy instructions for configuring JAP. Nevertheless, we can't guarantee that it will work. Furthermore, the automatic disconnect feature is problematic for your anonymity. (Why?) No! FritzWeb and similar programs are based on the idea that you're only logged on when you're transferring data. Otherwise the connection is automatically disconnected. Since continual logging in and out severely reduces your anonymity (Why?), support for FritzWeb or similar programs is not planned. Instead, we hope that flat rates will become cheaper so that this problem no longer exists. Can I install JAP on a central server and allow multiple computers access to it?Yes! Start JAP on the server. Under "Config/Portlistener", deactivate "Allow access to JAP from localhost only" so that other computers can use JAP to surf. On the other computers, configure the browser as you would for local JAP use. The only exception is that instead of localhost or 127.0.0.1 as the server address, you need to use the actual address of the server with JAP running on it. I don't have a flatrate or permanent internet connection. In other words, I dial in with a modem. Does JAP automatically reconnect? You can set JAP to reconnect automatically under Config/Anonymity. But be careful! Frequently logging on and off greatly reduces your anonymity. Why? |
